 HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

  • Nature
  • A virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections.

- Transmission

  - Sexual contact with an infected person

  - Sharing needles or syringes

  - Mother-to-child during childbirth or breastfeeding

  - Less commonly, through blood transfusions or organ transplants

 

Stages of HIV Infection

1. Acute HIV Infection

   - Occurs 2-4 weeks after exposure

   - Flu-like symptoms (fever, rash, swollen glands)

   - High viral load, highly infectious

2. Chronic HIV Infection (Clinical Latency)

   - Can last several years

   - Virus is active but reproduces at low levels

   - Often asymptomatic but can still transmit the virus

3. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)

   - Final and most severe stage of HIV infection

   - Immune system is severely damaged

   - CD4 count drops below 200 cells/mm³ or the occurrence of certain opportunistic infections/cancers

   - Without treatment, survival typically 3 years

Diagnosis

- HIV Tests

  - Antibody Tests Detect antibodies to HIV in blood or oral fluid. Most rapid tests and home tests are antibody tests.

  - Antigen/Antibody Tests: Detect both HIV antibodies and antigens (p24 protein). Can identify HIV earlier than antibody tests.

  - Nucleic Acid Tests (NATs)**Detect the virus itself. Expensive and not routinely used for screening.

  - Combination of HIV medicines taken daily

  - Reduces the viral load to undetectable levels
